10 Foods that Promote a Healthy Immune System
Jan 09, 2021Now more than ever it is so important to maintain a healthy immune system to help us fight off possible infection or illness.
One of the best ways to stay healthy is by choosing foods that are going to boost your immune system, like healthy, and delicious antioxidant-rich fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein.
Having a strong immune system is definitely a plus during any regular cold and flu season, but even more important when battling our current situation and the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are so many factors that go into keep our immune system strong like proper sleep, regular exercise, proper hygiene (keep washing those hands), social distancing, and of course nutrition!
How you fuel your body and what you are choosing to eat will play a key role in staying healthy.
For great immune boosting foods you want to be consuming foods high in vitamins, like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D, as well as minerals like zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.
Let's start with my favorite 3 Bs that will help you boost your immune system: Beans, Berries, and Broccoli > Adding beans to your meals, like black beans, garbanzo beans, white beans or lentils, are a great plant based protein source full of zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, B-vitamins and folate. , as well as plant-based protein.
> Berries contain vitamin C and a variety of flavonoids and antioxidants
> Broccoli is a nutrient-dense veggie rich in vitamins A, C and E.
Here are a few other great options to help build that strong immune system:
> Eggs - vitamins A, D, zinc and selenium, plus they are a great source of protein and very versatile.
> Greek yogurt excellent source of probiotics, bacteria that can help keep your gut healthy.
> Leafy greens like kale, spinach and collard greens, are great sources of vitamins A and C
> Oranges and other citrus fruits, like grapefruit, lemons, limes and tangerines, are rich in vitamin C.
> Fatty fish is great sources of omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA, vitamin D and zinc.
> Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene (vitamin A), vitamin C, fiber, manganese, potassium, B-vitamins and several antioxidants that help protect cells against disease.
