The Power of Positive Self-Talk - Tips for a Stronger Mindset
Jun 30, 2024
Sometimes when I'm out running and it starts to feel hard or my motivation just isn't there, the voice in my head starts to get louder . . . you know the one. The one that says “It's okay to quit!” The one that says “You're crazy for doing this, you're not a runner!” The one that says “You're too tired, you're too slow, you're too old, just give up.” Yeah that voice.
It's almost like I'm a cartoon character where on my left shoulder is this little devil version of Karen, and on the right side is a little angel version of Karen. The angel side reminds me that I can do hard things, that I'm worth the effort, the time, the energy. I like her because she's loud and she's confident, she knows she has to be loud to overpower the little devil on my left side.
I often find myself talking out loud during hard workouts or long runs, hyping myself up and cheering myself on. While others might think I'm crazy, I'd rather be seen as a little crazy than a quitter.
Wouldn’t it be nice to always have someone who provides encouragement, support, and insightful advice in difficult times or uncomfortable situations? The good news: You can be that voice for yourself.
I want you to take a few minutes and think about what you’ve said to yourself today. Was it critical? Or was it kind and helpful? How did you feel after you engaged in this inner dialogue?
Our thoughts dictate our mood, drive our emotions, and determine how we will connect with others. Those little conversations you have with yourself can be either destructive or beneficial.
What Is Positive Self-Talk and Why Does It Matter?
Positive self-talk is the way you speak to yourself. It can either be your biggest cheerleader or your harshest critic. Those little conversations in your head shape your mood, drive your emotions, and influence how you connect with others.
If your self-talk leans negative, it can sap your confidence and leave you feeling stuck. But when it’s positive? You can build resilience, face challenges with confidence, and achieve your goals.
How to Break the Cycle of Negative Self-Talk
Our inner dialogue is often shaped by the language we've heard from others—especially during our formative years. It’s easy to carry those voices into adulthood without even realizing it.
Here’s how to start breaking the cycle:
- Identify Negative Patterns: Pay attention to the critical voice in your head. When does it show up, and what does it say?
- Challenge the Thoughts: Ask yourself, “Is this thought helpful? Is it even true?”
- Reframe the Narrative: Turn “I’m too old to do this” into “I’m proud of myself for showing up and doing my best.”
Empowering Tips for Positive Inner Dialogue
Surround Yourself with Positivity: The people you spend time with, the books you read, and the content you consume influence your mindset. Seek out uplifting voices that encourage positive thinking.
Practice Gratitude: When negative thoughts creep in, counter them by listing three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude shifts your focus to the good in your life.
Visualize Success: Picture yourself crossing the finish line of a race, completing a tough workout, or simply feeling proud of your efforts. Visualization is a powerful tool to rewire your mindset.
Use Positive Affirmations: Choose phrases that resonate with you, like:
"I can do hard things."
"I am worthy of love and effort."
"Every day, I’m getting stronger."
Talk to Yourself Like a Friend: Would you tell your best friend she's not good enough or that she should quit? Of course not. Show yourself the same compassion.
The Choice Is Yours: Shift to a Positive Path
Positive self-talk is a choice. The more you recognize and replace those negative thoughts, the more natural positivity will feel. You are in control of your mindset.
